Landscape shooters - Sun Angle Calculator

20th June 2009
When planning a landscape shoot it's always useful to know when and where the sun will appear or disappear so that you can see what will be lit or in shadow and make the best of the available light in your shot. Although it's easy enough to find the sunrise and sunset times it's not so easy to know just where on the horizon the appearing/disappearing act will take place.

So I created my own version and here’s an image you can print out to use in conjunction with a compass to gauge the angle of the sunrise and sunset at any time of year in the Northern hemisphere. Please consider leaving a small donation if you find it useful.

The chart shows the position of the sunrise and sunset for the first day of each month. Simply point the N to north and read off the direction. For dates other than the first of the month, simply gauge how far through the month you are and go between the first of the month you are in and the next month, so the 15th is about halfway.

I laser engraved one on thin perspex to keep in my wallet.
